When I wrote my first review of GTM I did my utmost best to leave my emotions out of it. The one thing that I didn’t really try to understand is GTM’s side of how things appear and their point of view. We received a phone call from the owners of GTM Matt and Shawn. They wanted to come by Tuesday and discuss the warranty ticket we put in for the overhang issues with our bay window flooring and overhang. We agreed.
Tuesday came and this was the first time I had met Shawn. They knew that I had fixed the issues myself with the overhang because it was keeping it cold in our house. We talked about other things that we’ve had fixed and the people they have working for them. I truly understand it’s a big job to find just the right person to train and lookout for the interest of your company. I understand that a company as big as GTM has got 20 to 30 jobs going at the same time.
A lot to keep track of and I’m sure I couldn’t do it or want to try to do it. I think this is where most people build resentments and frustrations when buyers get pushed over to the waiting list to get issues resolved. For most people this is the biggest purchase they have ever made. Looking at it from GTM’s side I’m sure that 98% of the buyers that they talk to after the sale have negative things to say and I too would be on the defensive. I know for me after spending $425,000 I felt that things should have been done and correctly before I moved in. All I ever wanted was what I paid for.
That day Shawn had the electricians come back and put light switches where they were supposed to be. He had his guy come the next day with our loads of dirt and build my yard up per our agreement. His guy really went beyond my expectations and took care of us. I’ll be 64 years old next month so big jobs stress me.
We do love our retirement home and look forward to getting the yard done in the spring. The best advice I could give anybody would be to be active with every phase of the building of your home. GTM promotes Building their homes in 90 days from the time they get their permits. When things get covered over its a lot more work to fix it. GTM can’t fix it if they don’t know it’s wrong. If I could give GTM any advice it would be to promote 120 days and have a walk thru at every phase. That would catch 95% of any issues and educate buyers about what they can expect with their home.
One last thing I would like to say to buyers is you are not just buying a home. You are buying the property it sits on. Make sure you understand what it’s going to look like when you move in. After you sign that contract it’s all your responsibility after that. I can honestly say that I have the utmost respect for Matt and Shawn and the homes they build have way more amenities as a standard for an affordable price than other builders. I would recommend GTM builders to anyone looking to build a new home.
