We worked with Matthew to design our forever home. He was very patient in gathering our ideas and expectations, then asked us to trust him. We are so glad we did! The final home design was not what we were expecting, but it is exactly what we wanted. Matthew and team were easy to work with, very responsive, open to ideas and suggestions, and great at what they do. As we've provided copies of plans to the county, contractor, subs, etc. every one, without fail, has commented on how well drawn, well thought out, and so detailed the plans are. What a great experience!

We worked with James Carrick to prepare plans for an addition to our home. The plans included quite a bit of remodeling to the existing home, to accommodate the addition. James came to our home and discussed the project, also taking measurements. He drew a proposed plan and then the refining began. Each time we met, we would bring a list of questions or concerns and potential changes. James would brainstorm possibilities with us to deal with our concerns, and begin drafting some of the possibilities on the spot so we could imagine how the elements would fit together. One time we even brought our builder with us to the appointment as we were finalizing the plans. At one point when I was very concerned about a certain area where a big beam would transition to the new part of the house, James had his father Joe join our meeting (with our builder there too) and they both talked with us about my concerns until we came to a decision. I always felt that we had plenty of time to work out concerns and ask questions, and we were very grateful for James' creative suggestions. One especially great idea he had was to include a two-sided fireplace at the transition between the existing home and the addition. We would probably never have thought of doing a fireplace that way and now it is one of our favorite parts of the addition. Our project is now finished and we are so happy that we worked with the Carricks. We would highly recommend their services to anyone.

Although friendly, the communication was lacking from their side. Multiple times I had to reach out for clarification on turn-around times for updated plans. The updated emails from the draftsman were sent on Friday afternoons just before closing, which prevented any feedback communication until the following week, but again, I needed to reach out to them via phone call as there was consistently delayed responses to my emails. Also, there was a lack of research on their part, meaning, we were hoping for a front porch addition to our home, and we almost had the finalized plans sent to the engineers before the architect realized he hadn’t checked the city ordinances regarding proper set backs from the curb. Turns out that we couldn’t have a front porch after checking. This was nearly 5 months time wasted with a hasty final revision. (Jan 17th 2023-June 19th 2023) I wouldn’t recommend this business.

Update: The owner of the business had reached out to me and listened to the reasons I had left the review. He was very considerate to understand and intentional in his efforts to rectify the situation. Even though much time had been lost in the process, he took full responsibility for the education of his employees to mitigate further such occurrences. I greatly appreciated this gesture and trust that you will have a better experience because of it.

We hired JCD to design the house of our dreams. They were very easy to work with and were able to turn our description of what would be a dream house, into a design that ultimately became a reality. Throughout the process they continued to give us ideas on how to make the floorplan as functional and inviting as possible. In addition, our contractor commented that the plans provided by JCD were very easy to work with, helping the project move smoothly. I would use them again.

The idea of building our dream home was one thing; actually building it was a whole other story. We had no idea what we were getting into or the amount of work and stress it would demand of us. Let’s just say, we plan for this to be our forever home.

We’ve been in the home now for 9 months, and it took around two years to complete. The home is around 12,000 SQF, with a naturally lit indoor basketball/pickleball court, indoor trampolines, theater, weight room, water park, and more. Our house IS the hangout house for our kids, their friends, and our friends.

We’ve been through 50+ subs and hundreds of workers, and it is only having gone through this process in its entirety that one can truly appreciate people like James and his team.

James has the emotional intelligence of a board-certified therapist, the communication skills of a hostage negotiator, and the creativity of a DreamWorks animator. Without question he was the most calm and comforting presence throughout the entire experience. Trust me, you are going to need a James on your team.

Your dream, that thing inside your head, is literally his to envision and architect into reality.

We sent him a few inspiration pics, coupled with some vague descriptions of what we thought we had in mind. He took our pics, our ideas, and our odd-shaped lot and slowly but surely, through dozens of iterations and renderings, he manifested what we didn’t even know was possible…so much more than we ever expected.

We have many friends who have built homes that shared all kinds of things they wished they had done differently, thought of, made bigger, made smaller, found useless, etc…My wife and I have asked each other, “Has there been anything you wished we had that we didn’t do or wished that we’d done differently?”

Our answer, “nothing.”

The home is more than we could have ever dreamed of, and it was only with the help of a visionary like James that it was made possible. We love you, James. Thank you for the countless memories we’ve already made and the millions more to come.

If I were a betting man, I’d put it all on James and Carrick Custom Home Designs.
