Waste of time, money and trust. We spent weeks doing our due diligence on a condo being shown by Jon Properties. We negotiated in good faith and were told the owner had accepted our offer. We hopped on a plane and flew 2,000 miles to see the unit and seal the deal. We were shown all the great features of the building. Then, soon as we walked in the unit, the leasing agent said the owner just got a higher offer, apparently from a friend’s kid (implication being if we still wanted the unit we’d need to up our price after having already agreed on terms). That alone was a major betrayal. It got worse as we were shown another unit available for rent. We were told owners had rejected a couple offers at a certain level, so we upped ours to show we were serious. Our more than fair offer at a DC price point was rejected with owners saying “we’re too far apart” on numbers. More like, they’re too far from reality and integrity. If we didn’t have a chance why lead us on? Why not hold an owner who’d already accepted an offer accountable? Bottom line: Don’t drive across town, let alone fly across the country to see properties being shown by these guys unless terms are etched in stone, and even then don’t count on them to be in your corner holding landlords to basic standards of professionalism and honest dealing.
