I was contacted by Darby about a PM role at a major oil pipeline. I took their assessment survey and was invited into their office to meet Dan. Everything seemed on point, I was told there would be a few rounds of interviews for a long term client which already had Darby consultants onsite. I was able to glance at an employee handbook, but not allowed to take it with me. Dan Darby hyped up their pay and bonus structure, but again I was never allowed to see it.

I spent the next few weeks interviewing with the client along with the other hopefuls and was told after it that I was their guy and get ready for work.

A week went by and I finally called Dan asking for a status. His response was "We are waiting for them to sign the Statement of Work"- If that doesn't send up red flags to you nothing will. Why would you be interviewing for a job that hasn't been put in place yet?

Another week went by and Dan states they are ready and we agreed on a verbal offer hourly amount. "Get ready to start next week" he said. It was all high fives during the call.

That start date never happened.

I finally called him on Thursday and he said they never signed the paperwork and that the job was no longer there. "Good luck" was all I received in writing.

Turns out there was never a role at the pipeline. After calling one of the other candidates it was apparent that Darby used us to market the types of PMs that could be offered in the future.

Meanwhile I had set some financial goals with the family, sent the work clothing to the cleaners, and was dealt a crushing blow in the end.
