First time riding the train and it was rather enjoyable. Plenty of room to stretch out with huge reclining chairs and room for storage. Plug ins to charge things and a relaxing trip looking at small towns and the Texas countryside.

Dining car is very comfortable and has snacks and refreshments.
This was a very inexpensive and relaxing way to travel across Texas.

I plan to take my daughter on a summer trip out west and they even have room for pets and a large storage to bring a bike with.

We took an Amtrak for the first time to Dallas and had a good experience. The employees were friendly and so were the passengers. What would be nice is if they had mentioned the free parking spaces on their website instead of suggesting nearby parking garages, as we thought we couldn't park in their lot and so had friends transport us. There is plenty of parking for everyone, so don't be fooled by their website. The station opens at 9 so if you come before then you'll be waiting outside. But we had a good experience and our kids especially had fun.

The station and the staff are just fine but our ride from San Marcos to Austin (10/21/2017)which should have taken 1 hour took 2 (because of an issue with a freight train)and our return trip to San Marcos was delayed 2.5 hours with a similar issue. Amtrak themselves were very apologetic and made all of us as comfortable as possible. I guess this mode of transportation while inexpensive (38$ round trip for 2 of us) will eventually go the way of the dodo. Sad! But we were looking for the experience and all and all we had a great time. There was a family of 20 waiting with the rest of us and we were all friendly and helpful toward one another! God Bless them and God Bless America

For my first train ride, it started better than it ended. The Austin train station staff and facilities were great overall. The wife and I decided to go to Dallas for Labor Day weekend. I had a car accident and can't drive due to a broken right tibia, talus, and ankle. We got onto the train and were able to find seating, which was comfortable, but we learned to line up earlier next time. As a newbie, I would advise asking others who have ridden Amtrak for advice on how things worked for them. It will help when you need to speak with staff or find the dining cart. The Amtrak train has limited food options, so you may want to bring food. I had a grilled cheese sandwich and ginger ale, and my wife had a hamburger and ginger ale. Luckily, we got our food about an hour before we arrived because the wife experienced some stomach issues with the burger. When we arrived in Dallas, the exiting process was easy, and the station was huge. The train station was decent but had a broken men's restroom. We ultimately had to find alternative transportation to get home. Our train departure was delayed several times, and we noticed we would not get home until 10:30 p.m. After 2 hours of delays, Amtrak provided an option to get a refund or wait for the train to leave. We found alternative transportation, which was a nightmare. I would recommend Amtrak overall and will likely try it again.

At our stop in Austin I went to the restroom and noticed my bag was missing, I then found it on the other stowed luggage side wide open. When I brought it to the attention of the Amtrak employee he just looked at me and walked away. I quickly closed it and haven't looked to see if anything is missing since my final destination is San Antonio. I am just very disappointed in the lack of empathy or direction on what to do in an instance such as this. So , my first round trip train ride was 3 hours and 15 minutes late, my bag was moved and opened and no concern was shown when I pointed out the issue. Yup, winning combination, especially since after my first leg of the journey I felt this may be my new method of travel. Definitely left a bad impression, and many people had asked me to let them know about the experience since they were potentially interested. I'm not sure I can honestly recommend at this point.

It is a nice station to go to.it is generally clean, it is close to downtown, and has a nearby bus stop to go to. I go here often and don't have any issue in the waiting area.
